Take Advantage of Being a Boomer – Senior Discounts Start at Age 55

Senior discounts start when we are almost out of our teens. Just kidding, but it sure feels that way when you receive one at the young age of 55! There are lots of restaurants and stores offering discounts, but you have to ask.

Here are many places that offer senior discounts at only 55 years old. If you know of more, please email me and I’ll add the info.

RESTAURANTS (55+):

  • Arby’s: no company-wide discount; some locations still offer 10% off (55+)
  • Chick-fil-A: 10% off or a free small drink at participating locations (55+)
  • Chili’s: 10% off at participating locations (55+)
  • Denny’s: no company-wide percentage discount, but most locations have a discounted 55+ menu; AARP members get 15% off (up to $10) with a membership card
  • Dunkin’ Donuts: no corporate policy; many locations offer 5% off or a free coffee/donut for AARP cardholders if asked (55+)
  • El Pollo Loco: 10% off, varies by location (55+)
  • Fuddruckers: senior platter discount varies by location (55+)
  • IHOP: no nationwide discount, but a 55+ menu with smaller, lower-priced portions is available at most locations
  • Jack in the Box: discount varies by location (55+)
  • KFC: inconsistent — some locations offer a free small drink with a meal, others offer nothing (55+); ask before ordering
  • Long John Silver’s: discount varies by location (55+)
  • McDonald’s: no company-wide discount; some locations still offer a reduced-price small coffee, roughly $0.64-$1.04 (55+)
  • TCBY: 10% off at participating locations (55+)
  • Wendy’s: no advertised policy; many locations offer 10% off or a free drink if you ask (55+)
  • Whataburger: free 16oz soft drink or 12oz coffee with an entrée at participating locations (55+)

RETAIL & APPAREL (55+):

  • Goodwill: 10-30% off one day a week, day and amount vary by location (55+)
  • Michaels: 10% off every day, in-store and online, requires free Michaels Rewards account (55+)
  • Ross Stores: 10% off every Tuesday (55+)
  • The Salvation Army Thrift Stores: discount varies widely by location (commonly 10-50% off), one day a week (55+)
  • Walgreens: 20% off on the first Tuesday of the month, in-store (myWalgreens members 55+) or online with code SENIOR20

GROCERIES (55+):

  • Albertsons: 10% off on the first Wednesday of the month (first Thursday in Idaho), participation varies by region — not offered in California (55+)
  • Fry’s Food Stores: 10% off on the first Wednesday of the month, in-store and same-day pickup/delivery (55+)
  • Hy-Vee: 5% off on Thursdays at participating locations (55+)
  • Kroger: no chain-wide discount anymore; some stores run occasional Senior Discount Days offering an extra 5% off — enroll in Kroger’s rewards program and check with your local store (55+)

TRAVEL (55+):

  • Best Western: 10-15% off for guests 55+, or 5%+ off for AARP members
  • Myrtle Beach Resort: 10% off daily/weekly condo rates for guests 55+
  • Hampton Inn & Suites: up to 10% off Best Available Rate for guests 65+; Hilton properties worldwide offer 5%+ off for AARP members
  • Avis: up to 35% off base rates for AARP members
  • Budget: up to 35% off base rates for AARP members, plus a free car class upgrade and additional driver
  • Hertz: up to 20% off through the separate Hertz 50+ program (not an AARP benefit)

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT (55+):

  • Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: 55+ ticket and annual pass discounts available online — check buschgardens.com for current pricing

CELL PHONE DISCOUNTS (55+):

  • AT&T 55+ Plan: unlimited talk, text, and data, plus 10GB hotspot data
  • Verizon 55+ Unlimited Plan: discounted rate starting around $45/month for one line — currently limited to Florida residents only
